Prepare the Patties
- In a mixing bowl, gently form the ground beef into 4 equal balls, about 4 ounces each. Do not overwork the meat.
Grill the Patties
- Preheat the grill to high heat. Place the meat balls on the grill and use a spatula to smash each ball down to about 1/2 inch thick.
- Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side, then flip and place a slice of cheese on top. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the burger reaches desired doneness.
Assemble the Burgers
- Toast the burger buns on the grill for about 1 minute. Layer the bottom bun with lettuce, the smashed patty, tomato slices, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. Top with the other half of the bun.

For a smoky flavor, consider adding some smoked paprika to the ground beef before forming the patties.
